Despite Quibi’s trouble making the format work, indications around the industry seem to show that mobile video consumption is on the rise. Just how much though, might be a little surprising.

At present, mobile video accounts for well over half of mobile bandwidth – 63%. But according to a recent “Mobility Report” from Ericsson, mobile video will account for 76% of mobile bandwidth consumption by 2025.

Ericsson cited several reasons for their growth projections. Mainly, they said, mobile video has creeped beyond streaming services and is now a huge part of social media, news, and advertising (and of course, mobile streaming usage is up too). 

But in addition, consumers are using devices with bigger screens and higher resolutions. 480p is the mobile standard at the moment, but devices with HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p) capability are quickly becoming more common. Add in fringe formats like 360 degree video, augmented reality and virtual reality, and it’s easy to see why video is on the rise. 

Larger deployments of 5G networks will also cause a higher rate of consumption, they said.

This prediction actually falls fairly close to one Cisco made back in 2016 about the year 2020 when they projected that video would account for 79% of Internet data consumption period. 

Overall, it seems that people are simply watching more videos on the mobile phones these days – over a number of different formats. The question is, will streaming services have to adapt or have attempts to do so already proven that’s an avenue not worth taking?
